May the Purge Begin

Juan Sebastián Verón
Veron muscled his way back into the NT, only to gave his people another disappointment. Perhaps he's got some professional career left, and maybe even a political career to pursuit in the future, but his days with the Albicelestes had come to an end.
Said so himself, it's time to make way for the younger people.

Roberto Fabián Ayala
The captain had also said goodbye. 13 years of service and only an Olympic gold to show for. El Ratón's story represented his entire generation of players. He led them onto the world stage, now he will lead them off.
Ayala's not only took off the number 2 Jersey, more importantly, he took off the captain's armband. Burdisso knew his moment had arrived, but will he become a starter, or a leader?

Argentina had produced some extraordinary individuals in the past 15 years, but never a team. This exceptional generation of world class talents brought back nothing but sorrow to their people.

Since the 93' Copa America, we have exited the tournaments by losing to: Romania 94', Brazil 95', Peru 97', Holland 98', Brazil 99', England 02', Brazil 04', Germany 06', Brazil 07'.

The only pause was when Argentina refused to go to Columbia.
We were defeated by strong opponents. These weren't choking, rather genuine smack-downs. The teams that defeated us were stronger, not in the physical or quality sense referring to individual players, they were better as units. More organized and more coherent, better morale and stronger will to win.

Veron is too old now to drop back quickly to defend. But still, no one can copy how to lob a ball beautifully like Veron did. It's his trademark! Just like Beckham on his crosses. Veron, just like Zidane, you've added art to football, i will miss you badly after this!

This post by Failed State on BS pretty much explained the Veron Complex:

My main problems were with Veron and Heinze, Bielsa liked Veron instead of Riquelme and couldn't have them playing together. Basile decides to have them both on the field. Pekerman doesn't like having a Heinze as a LWB when he's got someone faster like Sorin that can even cross better, so he uses him as CB as Sir Alex Ferguson has sometimes done, only to sometimes have drastic results. Instead of Veron we've got players like Maxi Rodriguez or even D'Alessandro to play the midfield with a quick pass release, Maxi even has the inate ability of performing as a striker when the chance presents itself. The role currently being held by Veron is for someone else, his time has passed.

and here's more of his posts:

Argentina is most comfortable when they possess the ball, it's part of our tango win or lose. In the upcoming years relying on Riquelme may not be a factor.

Since the win in 78 Argentina is caught between two styles of futbol, one created by Menotti and the other by Bilardo. The one common thing about both winning teams, was the defensive players. Both teams tenian carniceros "butchers", but only one team had a true enganche and that was Maradona.

Basile in 91 and 93 never had a true enganche, Gorosito was probably the closest to that role, but the defense which included Simeone and Ruggeri were the focal points of those teams. For the 94 WC Basile after suffering difficulty in la eliminatorias rebuilt the team around Maradona, after Maradona was out of the picture the team fell apart along with the tactics.
