World Cup Qualifiers
The first two qualifier matches for 2010 World Cup are coming up.
Argentina faces Chile on 13th of October, and then Venezuela on the 16th.
The good news is, we have quite a few forwards ready to go.
Messi is obviously in the formation.
Saviola is getting goals for Real Madrid.
Aguero is on fire, with 3 goals in 4 matches.
Tevez is playing tandem with Rooney and scored his first for ManU this morning.
Bad news... well, Riquelme isn't getting pitch time. Will Basile still call him up? Aimar hasn't been doing too well in Zaragoza, with only 1 win so far this season.
Defense looked ok for now.
Mascherano doesn't appear to be 100% but he should get his job done in important matches.
For CB we have Burdisso, Demichelis, Garay and Milito. All 4 are quite good in the air, and 3 of them are fast enough to cover ground. Since Chile will probably lob a whole lot, we should worry more about aerial threats.
Zanetti and Heinze can TCB out wide for now. Hopefully we'll have legitimate replacement for both of them by 2010 though.
We have Gonzalo Rodriguez coming back from his injury. If all goes well, we should be able to play him next spring, which would free up Burdisso to take care one flank.
Attacking midfield is a mess, but nothing could be done till the CAM position is filled properly. Which probably means Roman. Maxi is still quite good IMO, he needs to be 100% physically before the 13th. The best combination of the 2 outside midfielders is one box-to-box fighter and one creative playmaker that could work with the CAM. I think Gago sort of fits the bill on both ends, but he isn't getting pitch time in Real Madrid. Perhaps it's time to look into the Argentine league.
We should have an idea of Basile's list by the end of this coming week. Please God Let Us Have A Real CAM!!! And if I may ask for more, can we try out a shorty forward combo instead of using the garbageman again?

what's a CAM ?
center attacking midfielder
3-5-2????
Burdisso Milito Demichelis
Masch Gago
Zanetti Maxi
Messi
Tevez Crespo/Aguero
ne one has a take on this????
Last week was very great for Argentina . Messi,Tavez,Saviola ,all scored for their respected clubs.
But I am very upset about Roman Riquleme. I don't know whats wrong with him . He is losing his talent and game. Hope we could see back in action soon .
I am not able to find out juan sorin ? could you tell me where is he? Has he retired from Argentina national team? Juan
Sorin .. In diego's word he is wild animal .
Good news about Diego Maradoana that he is planing to come UK .
Thanks for ur updates on incoming friendlies .
Take care and god bless
There are alot of possibilities with 3-5-2. One of the prominent benefits being that multiple playmakers could be deployed simultaneously.
However, almost all the 3-5-2 variations (including the V-shaped midfield arrangement) required good wing backs, which isn't exactly Argentina's favorite category.
Sorin still plays for HSV. He had to get a surgery done (knee?) and hamburg couldn't do it in Germany because they "had to use their limited medical facilities to take care the 'more important players'". So Sorin went to Spain for the procedures.
The exclusion of Sorin from NT looked purely politically motivated. If it was in an European or North American country, Grondona will probably get sued for antisemitism...
Gago is crap, he shouldn't be in the squad. I would take Beluschi, Banega, Biglia, Lucho or Cambiasso over him.
pfft Lucho...
Gago is like a better version of Ever Banega. He went to Real Madrid as part of their future plan, so he'll get the pitch time sooner or later.
Shit, if not for Gago's last minute assist to Roberto Carlos, Real Madrid wouldn't of gotten the Spanish title last year. Say that about any of the names you mentioned...
Progott-I suggest you watch more Real Madrid matches.
i watch almost every madrid match. As long as gago doesn't start he shouldn't be in the NT.
Di Maria should get some playing time with Benfica. I WISH he can play for Argentina, i think his potential is limitless.

Rio, isnt our problem being too short up front and in the back? I mean sure we can beat teams in south america because they are a bit small. Now if we are in the WC and play a large team like the DUTCH how will how "Shorty" line up do? Then again, Messi,Aguero,Tevez just ran at defenders. BUT What about in the air when we get corners???, will we have to play it, in and out . Just wondering..
JACK.
Hi, Jack.
Height up front is an option. When all the ground routes are locked up, if we could lob, it would at least help to sustain pressure. Deploying players that could compete in the air would also force our oppositions to play aerial specialists, who probably wouldn't be all that impressive on the floor (Tall people usually aren't very agile) and give our ground games more room.
Without a target person, options like these are taken away and it makes our offensives more predictable. However, there doesn't appear to be a good candidate for #9, yet we have more than enough excellent sprinters. If we force ourselves to use a target forward that isn't ideal, we might end up losing more scoring chances...
The Tevez-Messi combo looked promising, and the 2 definitely haven't been spending enough time together. For how little they had co-operated, they've already sparked some magical moments. If Basile had the guts to continue starting the 2 simultaneously, who knows what the combo might become. There sure is a hell lot of potentials, and the setup gives us 2 crazy setpiece takers, one left footed and one right.
"As long as gago doesn't start he shouldn't be in the NT."
Then who should we use for CAM? Roman hasn't been getting any pitch time either, and Aimar had been sucking...
Belluschi
what do you guys think about german denis up front? He's on fire this season and i think he should be called up.
I would play like this in the WCQ:
------------Carizzo-------------
Zanetti-Milito-Demichelis-Burdisso
---------Mascherano--------------
---------Belluschi--------Tevez
Messi---------------------------
-Aguero/Saviola-----Denis/Crespo-
When the tem is under presureBelluschi and Tevez can stay more back and messi will be the OM. When we are on the run then Belluschi will be the CAM with Tevez on the wing and Messi on the other side, who is a bit more offensive than Tevez. I really love the offensive formations of Bielsa, why sit all our good player on the bench and play with 3 DM like Basile does it?
Belluschi is a CAM/SS. Kinda like Roberto Baggio's position when he was with inter. He hasn't demonstrated the ability to stay wide and fill the wing spaces.
Tevez is also too offensive to be a reliable outside mid assisting whoever the enganche may be.
Bottomline is, why play players out of their natural position? Why make attackers defend?
And in the 4-3-1-2, we usually don't use DM for both outside mid positions. It's usually an attack-defend combo, and players like Veron and Cambiasso should not be classified as DM.
Tevez isn't out of position. Do you actually watch him playing? he allways traks back to the MF to get balls, why not play him there.
Go look for articles on this blog before Copa America. The possibility of using Tevez at one of the flanks was discussed long ago.
It's pointless. The ability to tackle doesn't mean he's suitable to defend. An attacking minded player doesn't have the intuition to play constructive supporting roles.
And stop with the "Do you actually watch him play" bullshit. The content of this blog isn't about whether one watches the Argie games, that's never a choice for the readers of this blog.
Rio, what do you think about Di Maria? For some reason, I really loved his style in the U-20's. The kid can fly!
