This is for real, so let's hope our NT got their shit together.
I had to ask one question though: Why is Insua still on the team when Roman is enlisted?
Getting pwned by Bielsa's Chileans at our home would really go down well in history... At least, for this occasion, Basile was willing to pick up Riquleme even without the player seeing pitch time at Villar... Like I said though, we don't have a better choice atm, especially so if we continue with Basile's system. Who else would you trust more than Roman playing the enganche? I surely don't see another figure of that statue or charisma.
Crespo is not enlisted. I think it's a good thing. At least Basile is determined to use the short-short combo. We don't have a ideal #9. It's a fact whether we wanted to face it or not, so let's take the hit now, instead of later when we have no time to piece up a solution.
It is still necessary to hope...
The outside midfielder lineup featured the reintroduction of Cambiasso. Cuchu is a difficult to replace element that had worked relatively well on this Argentine NT, but with both him and Zanetti playing outside mid, we will not have sufficient support for Roman... Especially without the width from fullback we so badly needed. So I believe Maxi and Cambiasso will start on the flanks, while Zanetti picking up his usual right back position. We didn't have Maxi in Copa, and he had worked with Riquelme very well in the 06' WC. That's the fundamental difference between this and the summer team. Maxi will add pace and we should become more productive on the floor. In the case Riquelme and the forwards were all contained, Maxi should be able to process the ball better than Veron did in Copa final.
Garay isn't called up, and Diaz is back on the list. Well, there are plenty CB so it's ok to have Garay sitting out for now. I'm not very happy to see that Diaz again became Basile's approach to the fullback/width problem. It's not like he'll play him... Everyone and their mother knows that Heinze will occupy the left rear.
The goalie. I thought he was hurt? Does this mean Ustari is going to get a real game?
Maybe I'm wishing for too much again?
Anyway. I wanted us to lose.
I think we can benefit more from a loss than a win, especially against these mediocre south american oppositions. Better hurt now than later.

At least we need to try out real #9 as substitutions, like Cavenaghi, for example. We need options upfront. It's better than calling up Coloccini.
Rio, who should be our starting lineup? OK, I'll start first:
------------ Ustari
Zanetti -- Demichelis -- Milito -- Heinze
---------- Mascherano
- Maxi ------------------ Cambiasso
----------- Riquelme
------ Messi ------- Tevez
I felt Saviola is a better poacher, we'll see...
If Kun keeps on playing the way he is, I have a gut feeling he make take away Tevez's spot. I believe he already has 5 goals for ATL Madrid. The way he cuts the ball is just amazing.Tevez needs to leave Man United asap. I would like to see him venture of to Spain, maybe play with a team such a Sevilla or so.EPL is not for Argentines. He did a great job in the 2nd half with West Ham and became a cult hero but time to leave the EPL and go to La Liga!

As for a #9, we have been spoiled with big strikers in that last 20 years or so, with Caniggia,Batsituta,Crespo. Batsituta then Crespo came around and both were prolific goal scorers for Argentina, over 90 goals combined between the two if I am correct. Who was going to take Crespo's spot,Maxi Lopez(Who???????),then it was Cavenaghi only River were smart enough to send him to some other league besides sending him the Siberia to work to work for Stalin. The it became Higuaín aka too good to play for Argentina for any compet. I think it is a toss up who take that jersey, it is almost as hard as doning the#10.

Bielsa will likely lob. In this case, he'll have taller players all around the field, and it will be difficult for us to attack through the air anyway. So focusing our aerial efforts on defense and concentrating on ground games might not of been a bad plan.
If Bielsa ended up playing on the floor for whatever reason, then he probably doesn't have a good enough team to beat us that way, especially since we're at home.
This is a good chance to let the shorties partner up. Tevez and Messi had worked together couple times, but rarely with the CAM support of Roman.
Remember guys, we need to prepare ourselves for the future without the garbageman.
Aguero, Di'maria and their alikes will get to play during the Olympics. Their senior side career won't really start till after that (unless regulars gets injured). We have more reliable players for their positions. Choosing younger guys instead would be more risky both for the team and themselves.
Asil.
Tevez @ 100% > Saviola
Tevez now probably just about the same. Saviola obviously more experienced.
In Copa, wonder why when we play Gago with Mascherano, Mascherano will be pushed to the right of the diamond & Gago took center field? But, Masch did score 2 goals, though.
Rio, I just want to understand, if u don't mind. With 4-4-2 Diamond Basile employed, is he looking at 2 midfielders (left & right mids) with box-to-box style player?
usually not both box-2-box type because they also need to work with the CAM offensively. Cuchu isn't completely defensive, nor is Veron.
If you look at the distribution. 2 box to box outside mids would of made it 6:4 at the very best (6 defenders). If you count both as defensive elements then 7:3 because Mascher. 4-3-1-2 is a 5:5 formation fundementally. It should be described as 4-1-3-2.
With both Gago and Mascher, either one of them could turn offensive. Mascher's pushes could add more surprising element because he usually doesn't do that. Benitez also had started doing the same with him and it's effective. It's quite common for DMs to shoot long range, but how often have you seen Mascher shoot? He almost always get something when he pushes. I've seen him getting fouled at least 3 times this season, and I haven't watched all the liverpool matches.
Thanks, Rio. That's explain it.
rio,
in wc 06 sorin was the key guy in changing the formation from 4-3-1-2 to 3-4-1-2...the team was organized, symmetrical....and when the team was applying pressure on one side a holding midfielder was there , cambiaso to make sure no counter attack to surprise us...i still belive 3-5-2 is the suitable way for argentina if we want to continue the passing game....but basile is still insisting to do the same with zanetti on the right...remeber the first goal from brazil..zanetti was out of position ...the second goal came from hienze position....
basile is not using the right people nor the right tactics to fit his strategy...
i am afraid biels with his love to attack from the flanks...he will give us hard time,
bionic messi
Ya man, we desperately need width on the left. It would open up alot of options and allow us to utilize more space on the pitch.
Sorin isn't 100% fit. He just went through some surgery in Spain. He's also too old to use for long term. Number 1 priority of Basile's staff should be to locate a suitable left wingback. We have some options, like Pinola and Paulo Ferrari.
BTW, I'm watching the inter-roma match right now, and Cambiasso+Crespo just scored a beautiful goal and put inter ahead. Why can't the 2 do the same when playing for Argentina? It's not a motivational issue, I think it's the way we play doesn't quite suit their styles.
and fucking julio cruz just scored to make it 3-1!
holy shit, what a freaky day for the Argentines.
Rio,
what happen to Aimar?
mancini played on the counter attack against roma...the first goal was the key to destroy roma with julie being sent off...something basile wouldn't do !!!
by the way it openes a new subject....playing requelme means no counter attack not because he is slow but primarly because he always recieves the ball way front up the pitch with his back to his marker..he is always marked!!
is this limiting our options in the attack?
should riquelme play deep at least during defending so the team can gain most with his millimetric passes?
bionic messi
great points.
If we divide ball processing into reception, stabilization and execution 3 separate segments, Riquelme's first option always seemed to take his time during the 2nd stage, while most other world class players would combine the 3 steps into 2...
This is what 'slows' it down. On composed attacks, it gives time for other players to get into position, and Roman is very good at utilizing the opportunities he gets. However, like you said, on counter attacks we don't have the pace if going through Roman.
And that's why we need wing backs! Remember Maxi's wonder goal vs. Mexico? It was Sorin who initiated the counter attack with his perfect cross. We need options like that, and we need it now.
Using 4-2-3-1 would also create optional and faster routes since we can go through one of the DMs.
Wing plays often requires crossing because cutting into the middle from deep down is very difficult. We are "physically challenged" in the air, but working through the middle is always slower.
Aimar's performance lately had been disappointing. Him and you know who = the reason Zaragoza had been struggling. They continued to suck in the first half today.
After D'alessandro came on, it turned into a whole different ball game. Fucking Basile and his gay selection.
I'm new to this but Tevez, Messi, Saviola and Aguerro all look like 'shorties' to me. (And isn't A.Rooney a shortie?) Seems like the smart thing to do, 3 years before the WC is to let the shorties play together. They are all incredibly talented and should be able to make a success of it ... forget the high game and destroy the less 'short' opponents with what you do best.
And sorry for asking something so (perhaps) obvious but why doesn't Boca's Palermo rate for NT. He seems tall and scores a lot from up front.
Palermo is too old. When he was younger, Crespo was also younger and appeared to be more reliable.
Martin Palermo had some international caps. He missed 3 PK in 99 Copa group stage against Columbia :D
Too old too bad.
What a shame about the copa america final. It really seemed that if Roman had scored instead of hitting the post, it would have been different but instead ...
Roman, unfortunately, for all his genius and what have you just doesn't have it in him to pick it up a notch. Maybe he's always at maximum (for him) but if the other team doesn't get tired and is infused with adrenaline, Roman can't up the tempo ... either he can't physically or it just isn't his style. Tevez and Messi, on the other hand, can and will and Tevez certainly has.
What do you think the likelihood is that Carlos will eventually make captain?
