3 : 0 Bolivia

starting lineup:
Pato
Ibarra Demichelis Milito Zanetti
Mascherano Cambiasso
Messi Riquelme Tevez
Aguero

Don't think I'll have to say more. This is pretty much what I always wanted. 4-2-3-1 and it got us a 3-egg without an ideal #9.

International goal #1 for Aguero.
Roman got 2 again.
Gago went on about 70th minute replacing Cambiasso.
5 minutes later, after Roman scored our 3rd goal, Aguero was subbed by Maxi.
Tevez was switched out by Denis in the end.

Next stop, Columbia.

Come on I'm dying to hear some blogging on this in english. Being a non-argentine I get headaches trying to make heads and tails of the spanish language blogs.

by they way, i'll be in buenos aires the first 2 weeks of jan. Besides enjoying bifsteak at Mirasol in puerto madera, is there any good soccer i can be observing? Any good clubs/bars to watch the games at?

Sorry, Got caught up by couple things. I'll write a review after the Columbia match.

La Raya. It's bit more expansive than the average steakhouses, but you're guaranteed a satisfying meal.
By expansive I meant maybe 100 peso per person.
There are couple good places in San Telmo. It's more important to get the right cuts, because grilling a cow is essentially not hard. Best cuts are called lomo, or bife de lomo, aka tenderloin. There's really no reason to get bife ancho (prime ribs) when you are in B.A, since it's not expansive to get those anywhere else. Tons of Argentine beef gets imported to US anyway.
2nd best cut is probably bife de chorizo, or sirloin. Just a little below or above tenderloin, but I can't tell the difference most of the time. Don't always get the expansive (relative) cuts though, get some grill mixes, parrillada para dos.

Thanks. My esposa's a portena so I know all about the cuts of beef. Not sure why I wrote bifsteak when i meant bife de chorizo or as they say 'bife'. They swear that mirasol is the best meat place year in year out.

Any good argentine butcher shops in the NYC area that you know of?

GOL TV on FOX is showing the Bolivia game at night this week. I taped and watched the first 30 min of the game last night.

I love Tevez but am starting to understand why people rave about Messi. He just explodes and creates speed and movement at whim. He and Riquelme play at such totally different speeds. I wish I could follow all the spanish language press but is Messi happy with the relatively slow, deliverate Roman pace -- it seems so incongrous. I like Roman so this is not a criticism... but roman lopes around, spins in slow motion and lobs the ball over to messi who then explodes like a jet. Seems like Messi is made for a higher speed game.

Bolivia marked our players very tightly. 4-2-3-1 also offers less lateral freedom than 4-3-1-2. Coupled with the fact there's 1 less forward, the 4 guys (CAM, Wingers and the Striker) become easier to mark. However, either of the holding midfielders can become attacking element themselves. That alone adds alot of complexity. Not to mention, with 2 holding midfielders, it's also safer to let one of the fullbacks hang high. Generally speaking, 4-2-3-1 is a more advanced formation. Much safer to play, and offers more surprise elements.

What Roman does very well, and often overlooked by people is that he dictates the pace of the game. Against Bolivia, he had complete control over the tempo. We spent the 1st 20 minutes and much of the second half not doing much, but that's probably necessary since we're going to play Columbia tomorrow.

Another yellow and Mascher could of gotten suspension. So to avoid Bolivia counter attacks was one of the priority, more so after Cambiasso's injury. Basile didn't even take Mascher off, that showed alot of confidence over Roman's ability to control the match.

I think both Messi and Tevez play alot like attacking midfielders. Tevez perhaps more a submerged striker. In the future, when Roman retires, perhaps we can try something with both of them. 4-1-4-1 (essentially 4-3-3) perhaps. For now, what they did pleases me. Messi looked little tired, Tevez was simply brilliant.
